For something so small, they cause a lot of damage.
In many parts of the world mosquitos are far more than just an annoying little bug. They are dangerous and even deadly. Why? Because mosquitos carry the malaria virus.
Malaria is a big problem for developing countries, and it’s one we can’t afford to ignore. Here’s why:
Sick kids can’t attend Life Centers.
Our Life Centers offer children a space to meet Jesus and grow in their faith. But when kids get sick with malaria, they’re too weak to come their Life Centers, often for weeks or even months on end. That means no Bible lessons, no discipleship with their Life Center teachers, no new songs about Jesus, and no memory verses.
Here at Childcare Worldwide, we’re committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent kids from meeting Jesus. And that means we’ll do everything possible to make sure they can be at their Life Center every week. So, you can bet we’re going to do everything in our power to protect them from malaria!
Malaria kills over 450,000 people every year – most of them children.
The world is making progress against malaria, but there is still so far to go. Children are especially vulnerable to malaria as their bodies aren’t strong-enough to fight off the parasite. It’s heartbreaking to realize how many young lives have been ended before their time, all because of malaria.
Children like Leo deserve better.
Nine-year-old Leo is just one of the many children who has been afflicted by malaria. He lives in Kenya with his mom and his brother. His dad abandoned the family when he was very young, leaving them destitute. They were so poor, Leo thought his life couldn’t get any worse. But then he got a mosquito bite and contracted malaria. He was sick for weeks, and suffered terribly – he had fever and chills, diarrhea and vomiting, and extreme fatigue. His illness was terrifying for both him and his mom. Thankfully, his mom was able to get him the medical care he needed, and Leo survived. But we don’t want to see any more of our kids suffer the way he did!
Malaria is almost entirely preventable.
Thankfully, there is a simple solution to fight malaria: a mosquito net! The mosquitos that carry malaria tend to come out at night, and bite people while they’re asleep and vulnerable. But if you sleep under a mosquito net, the little monsters can’t get to you, and you’re safe from malaria!
With such high stakes and such a simple solution at our finger tips, we can’t afford not to provide mosquito nets for our kids!
Childcare Worldwide is grateful to partner with generous people all over the world to build a better life for kids in need. If you’re interested in providing a mosquito net for a child so they can sleep safely, click here.
