Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 59% of the population living on less than $1.90 a day. Over 100,000 children under five are suffering from severe malnutrition. And in addition to widespread poverty, Haiti has suffered from numerous major disasters in the last 20 years, including multiple hurricanes, major earthquakes and ongoing civil unrest. They often have no time to recover from one catastrophe before being hit by another. Haiti was the first Caribbean country to throw off colonial rule after being colonized by two different European nations, and their rich history is reflected in their language and culture.
Childcare Worldwide has been working in Haiti since 1983 and we currently have over 900 children enrolled in our sponsorship program there.
