Here at Childcare Worldwide, we put a priority on the spiritual needs of children, but we also know that just sharing the Gospel with a child is not enough if they are physically in need as well.
James 2:15-17 says, “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
We take this to heart, and every single time we invite another child in serious need to join our program, we are committed to their holistic health. Providing food, education, and medicine are some of the physical actions we take to make children feel loved and cared for, and that all lays the groundwork for our most important work – sharing the Gospel of Jesus to every child and inviting them to learn to trust in His love. The best place to do this is in our Life Centers.
I’d like you to meet Dan. He is sweet 12-year-old-boy who is a little shy, but always has a ready smile. Dan enjoys drawing, and when he grows up he wants to be both a doctor and a veterinarian. Dan lives with his parents and his younger sister and brother in Peru.
Every day, very early in the morning, his parents would leave to sell vegetables in the market, and every morning Dan woke very early to his little sister’s cries. As the oldest, he was always expected to look after his siblings. It wasn’t easy, and Dan would often get grumpy and frustrated with them. His favorite word to them was, “no.”
Then one day, Dan was chosen by a sponsor. Immediately, he began to receive the support that not only his body needed, but his mind, and spirit as well.
When Dan began attending his Life Center, he was very shy and quiet. He never raised his hand, and he found trying to memorize the Bible verses difficult. But his Life Center teachers were very loving and encouraging, and before he knew it, Dan began to thrive.
Now he eagerly raises his hand to answer questions about the Bible lessons and, with his teacher’s encouragement, he enjoys learning the verses. Connecting with loving adults and children at his Life Center began to transform his homelife, too! He learned to have patience and extra kindness with his brother and sister, and he is able to really enjoy being with them and helping them.
Soon his parents noticed his increased happiness and openness. His mother and father weren’t Christians, but his mother began to become interested in the teachings of the Bible, as he shared his Life Center lessons with his siblings.
Things were really looking up for Dan and his family. Then, COVID-19 caused the government to lockdown the country. Suddenly, his parents were no longer allowed to go and sell vegetables. With no other income or savings, his family was soon forced to move in with their relatives, just so that they had a little food to eat.
In the midst of it all, Dan did not lose faith. He continued to pray and believe that God would help him. Because of generous donors like you, our staff in Peru was able to communicate virtually with the kids, and they began to have online Life Center classes. They sent out special booklets to go with the lessons, and most importantly, were able to connect with and pray for the children online.
As soon as we learned about Dan and his family’s struggles, we sent packages of staple foods that were enough to feed his whole family. Dan knew that God and his sponsor loved and cared for him and his family. His mother was so moved that she emailed the teacher, asking for extra Bible study packets so that she could follow along with the Life Center lessons.
We love Dan and his family, and we are grateful beyond words that so many caring people reached out to help them. It is our joy to support families like theirs, so they can receive the physical, emotional, and spiritual support they desperately need in even the most difficult times.
We thank God for each of you every day. We feel your prayers and love. Thank you so much for your support.
Childcare Worldwide is grateful to partner with generous people all over the world to help share the Gospel with children in need. If you’re interested in helping children like Dan, make a gift to support Life Centers today.
