Did you know that there are hundreds of children who are currently drinking dirty water? The numbers are staggering.
- Globally, as many as 1 in 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water.
- Every day, 6,000 children die due to water-related diseases.
- Kids lose 443 million school days every year due to water-related illness, stifling their academic success.
This is why we’re committed to doing everything we can to ensure the children in our programs have access to safe drinking water.
The devastation of dirty water can’t be overstated.
For many, there is danger in simply gathering water. Little children are crossing busy highways on their own to reach their only water source. Along the way, they are dodging trucks, motorcycles and cars. Accidents are all too common, leaving children injured, sometimes paralyzed, and even resulting in death. Young girls are harassed along the way, enduring cat calls and much worse in their simple quest for a drink of water. And when they finally do arrive at the water source, that too can be dangerous. Open wells have steep, heavily eroded sides – one miss-step can easily send a child sliding to their death. Once they fall in, it can be nearly impossible to get back out especially if you don’t know how to swim. Too many of our kids have lost young friends to drowning.
Once they finally return home with their heavy water jugs, the danger still isn’t over – now they have to drink this contaminated water. Every sip is a gamble against cholera, typhoid, bilharzia and other deadly diseases. These diseases are painful and dangerous in and of themselves, but can also lead to life-threatening complications like dehydration. When they do get sick, families who are already struggling financially often wind up in even deeper debt to get their children the medical care they need to recover… and then the cycle starts all over again.
On top of all of that, dealing with a daily water crisis steals childhood. Kids spend hours of their day fetching water instead of learning, playing and growing. When they’re sick from drinking dirty water, they’re missing out on school and their spiritual development lessons.
Surviving without access to clean water is no way for a child to live. Thankfully, their stories don’t end there! Just read Miriam’s story to see how a simple water filter can transform their lives. Between water filters and water tanks, together we are solving the water crisis, one family and one community at a time.
