Three Years to Recovery...at Least.

We’ve known that it will be a very long road to restoration for Haiti, but on Monday, President Rene Preval gave a clearer picture of just how long it will be.  It will take 1,000 trucks moving rubble for 1,000 days, so that's three years. And until we move out rubble, we cannot really build," Preval said.  Some houses remain standing, but most are abandoned as many Haitians are still suffering from post-earthquake trauma and have fears of aftershocks.  Even President Preval himself admitted that he is still afraid of sleeping under concrete.

There are numerous difficulties in trying to rebuild an impoverished country amidst the threats of aftershocks.  There have been at least 54 recorded aftershocks since the major earthquake on January 12.  These aftershocks, though fairly small, have been just powerful enough to continue to collapse standing buildings.  One mother of three claimed that she will not go inside “until the ground calms down.”  In the mean time, her family of five is living in a make-shift tent.

The need for temporary shelter still remains, along with the great need for nutritious food.  Childcare Worldwide plans on continuing to feed families basic staples such as rice, beans, tomatoes, noodles and cooking oil through their Family Feeding Program.  We are strategizing how to support Haitians in the best way possible for as long as we can.  Please pray for the people of Haiti.
